When Did You
First Discover Unity?
Authored by Reverend Virgil Brewer at Unity Chapel
May 1, 2016
Do you recall when you first discovered Unity? In 1973, I was asked for the very first time: “When did you discover Unity?” I gave a clear-cut answer.

“Well, it was just last year in 1972; a friend gave me a Daily Word and invited me to her church in Columbus. The only thing I recall of the event was the Unity minister making reference to the Christ Consciousness … in a church, mine you! I knew I had to check this thing out! And so, I did.”

A year later, in 1974, someone else asked me the same question, but I gave a different answer – an earlier date.

“You see, I once attended a metaphysical conference in Virginia around 1971. It turns out that the keynote presenter was a Unity minister, Reverend Eric Butterworth. But I didn’t know that at the time.”

In the middle of his speech, a one-liner caught my attention: ‘We are not here to set the world right. We are here to see it rightly.’ I remembered having read that very statement in a book, Discover the Power Within You. I had not known that it was a Unity book written by Eric. He later told me I had caught him plagiarizing himself! So I guess I found Unity around 1970 when I read that Unity classic.”

In 1976, another person asked me the question. Yes, I gave a different answer – an even earlier date!

“Well, you see, last year 1975, I took my first trip to Unity Village in Missouri. When I discovered that the Unity World Headquarters was located on Route 50, I knew I had driven past it during my high school years on a trip I took to Kansas City. No interstate in those days, folks. Traveling west, I would have seen Unity Village as I glanced to my right (actually I don’t recall glancing, but it makes for good story). So, I guess I had discovered Unity in 1960 when I was a junior in high school.”

But then, later on in 1978, I had made a trip to the farm in southwestern Ohio to visit my parents. On the kitchen table was a Unity magazine that I brought with me. On the back page was an advertisement for Wee Wisdom, a children’s magazine. My mother shocked me, saying, “You read that Wee Wisdom magazine when you were in grade school”. I refused to believe it! I didn’t remember having read it! But Mom insisted, declaring that I had read it from cover to cover. Guess I had discovered Unity in 1954!

Go figure!
